A tax assessment or penalty can arrive years after the transaction it concerns, and the deadlines to respond are short. A tax lawyer in Turkey reviews the assessment, chooses the right remedy and represents you before the tax office and the tax courts. We advise individuals and companies, including foreigners with income or property in Turkey.
Tax Lawyer
Tax lawyer Istanbul: we challenge tax assessments and penalties, negotiate settlements (uzlaşma), litigate before the tax courts and advise foreigners on tax residency, property taxes and double taxation treaties.
Challenging Tax Assessments and Penalties
When the tax office issues an assessment or a penalty notice, you have three main options:
- Settlement (uzlaşma): negotiating the tax and penalty with the settlement commission. If settlement is reached, the case ends; if not, the court route remains open within the remaining time.
- Tax court case: filing a lawsuit before the tax court, generally within 30 days of notification.
- Penalty reduction: in certain cases, paying within the legal period with a reduction of the penalty.
Choosing between these options affects the amount you pay and the time it takes. We assess each notice individually.
Tax Audits and Inspections
We support companies and individuals during tax inspections, prepare responses to inspectors’ questions and challenge inspection reports that lead to assessments.
Tax Matters for Foreigners
- tax residency: when a foreigner becomes a Turkish tax resident and which income is taxable in Turkey,
- double taxation treaties between Turkey and many countries,
- taxes on buying, renting and selling property, including rental income declarations and capital gains,
- taxation of foreign-owned companies and dividend distributions.
